About Us

Who We Are

We are an organization of postgraduate students at the European Institute, London School of Economics and Political Science. We are committed to developing a new mission for the European Union - one that is bold and progressive, and able to act as a point of reference for member states and citizens alike.

Our organisation is a response to the deep concern amongst young people about the future of the European Union. In the present era of uncertainty and turmoil, we believe that it is the role, and duty, of those who grew up in a peaceful and prospering Union to take over the steering wheel and decide the shape that the future of our continent should take.

Given the crises of the last five years, the Union’s impact needs to be critically assessed not only by current leaders in European politics and society, but also by those who will lead the project in the next 25 years - the 1989 Generation.

The European project, though noble in its ideals, has hit a wall. We believe it is the responsibility of our generation to instil in it new vitality, articulating a unifying mission for the European Union, its member states, and citizens. It is time to adapt the institutional framework to contemporary challenges.

We launched our initiative in March 2015 as an internal organisation at the European Institute, London School of Economics and Political Science. Our team is formed of passionate individuals from over 15 European countries sharing a common belief in the potential of the EU and a determination to engage in the process of reform in order to ensure its long term success.

We are not just another conference or a European youth movement. We are empowering the 89ers to lead the process of EU reform. The 1989 Generation Initiative aims to foster a universal public debate that will generate the very best ideas and policy proposals from all European citizens.
